About the breed
A very old British breed descended from cats brought to the UK by the Romans, the British Shorthair is admired for its dense, plush coat and round face. The blue-grey colour is the best known.
Personality
Easygoing, calm and affectionate without being clingy. They enjoy company but are happy to amuse themselves.
Care tips
Exercise
Short play sessions each day help prevent weight gain.
Grooming
A weekly brush keeps their thick coat in shape, with more in spring and autumn.
Health
Prone to weight gain and heart disease (HCM). Regular check-ups and a lean figure are key.
Recommended food
Portion control matters for this stocky breed. A quality complete diet, with a weight-management formula if your vet recommends one, keeps them in shape.
Fun facts
- The British Shorthair is often linked to the grinning Cheshire Cat.
- Their round faces and cheeks are a breed hallmark.
