  • Lifespan13 to 16 years
  • EnergyVery high

About the breed

Named after Reverend John Russell, an English parson who loved fox hunting, these terriers were bred to bolt foxes from their dens. That fearless, tireless streak is still very much alive.

Personality

Bold, clever and full of beans. Jack Russells are brilliant problem-solvers who will happily outsmart you if they get bored, and they have a strong chase instinct.

Care tips

Exercise

Lots: an hour or more of running, games and training. Mental puzzles help burn energy too.

Grooming

Easy. A quick weekly brush keeps smooth and broken coats tidy.

Health

Generally hardy, but can develop knee problems (patellar luxation) and eye conditions. Secure fences are a must, because they are talented escape artists.

Recommended food

A quality small-breed formula suited to a very active dog. Use tiny training treats so extra snacks do not add up, and measure portions to keep them trim.

Fun facts

  1. Many Jack Russells can jump remarkably high for their size.
  2. They were bred to dig and chase, which explains the tunnels in your garden.
  3. There are two coat types: smooth and broken (wiry).
