About the breed
Early settlers in southern Africa crossed European hunting dogs with the ridged dogs kept by local Khoikhoi people. The result was a tough, athletic hound that could track big game, earning the nickname African lion hound.
Personality
Dignified, loyal and independent. Ridgebacks are gentle with their own people, reserved with strangers, and need patient, consistent training.
Care tips
Exercise
At least an hour a day. They love running, and a securely fenced space is a good idea.
Grooming
A sleek short coat that needs only a weekly rub down with a soft brush.
Health
Watch for hip dysplasia, thyroid problems and bloat. Ask your vet about the ridge, as some puppies can have a skin condition called dermoid sinus.
Recommended food
A quality large-breed adult formula. Because they are deep-chested, split food into two meals and avoid vigorous exercise straight after eating.
Fun facts
- The ridge of hair along their back grows in the opposite direction to the rest of the coat.
- Their lion-hunting history gave the breed its famous nickname.
- They are known for staying clean and having almost no doggy smell.
