About the breed
The Staffie was developed in the English Midlands in the 1800s from bulldog and terrier crosses. Once a tough working dog, today they are best known as devoted and affectionate companions.
Personality
Courageous, clever and famously people-loving. Staffies are playful, sometimes clownish, and thrive on human company. Early socialisation helps them get along with other dogs.
Care tips
Exercise
An hour or more a day of walks, tug games and training. They are strong pullers, so a well-fitted harness helps.
Grooming
Very easy: a quick weekly brush and the occasional bath.
Health
Some are prone to skin allergies and hereditary eye conditions. They chew hard, so choose tough toys.
Recommended food
A good-quality adult food in measured portions. If your Staffie has itchy skin or a sensitive tummy, ask your vet about a limited-ingredient recipe.
Fun facts
- Staffies are known for their broad, smiling faces.
- They are strong for their size and love a good game of tug.
- Most want to be right on your lap, whatever their weight.
