About
Chickens are hardy, clever and surprisingly rewarding. With safe housing and good care, a small flock gives you eggs, garden pest control and plenty of personality.
Personality and behaviour
Curious, social and very aware of the pecking order. Hens are usually calm and friendly, while roosters can be loud and protective.
Care tips
Housing
A secure, ventilated coop with roosting bars and nest boxes, closed at night against predators. Aim for at least about 0.4 square metres inside and 1 square metre of run per bird.
Daily
Fresh water always, egg collection daily, and a regular clean-out of bedding.
Health
Watch for mites, lice and worms. A dust bath helps them keep clean, and a chicken that is hunched or off its food needs attention.
Recommended food
Layer pellets or mash as the main diet, with grit, oyster shell for strong eggshells, and clean water. Greens and scratch grain make good treats in moderation.
Fun facts
- A good hen lays about one egg every 24 to 26 hours.
- Chickens make many different calls to communicate.
- They can recognise and remember many faces, including yours.
