About
Rabbits are social, intelligent and far more than a starter pet. They are playful, most active at dawn and dusk, and happiest with a bonded friend.
Personality and behaviour
Gentle and curious with a mischievous streak. A joyful leap and twist, known as a binky, is a sure sign of a happy rabbit.
Care tips
Exercise
Several hours a day in a large, safe run or rabbit-proofed room.
Grooming
Brush weekly, and daily when they are moulting. Long-haired breeds need more.
Health
Their teeth never stop growing, which is why unlimited hay matters. Any change in appetite or droppings needs a vet quickly.
Recommended food
Unlimited fresh hay should make up most of the diet, plus a daily handful of leafy greens and a small portion of pellets. Treat carrots and fruit as occasional extras.
Fun facts
- A binky is a happy jump and twist in mid-air.
- Rabbits have almost 360-degree vision.
- They can purr, with a soft tooth-grinding sound.
