About

Reptiles such as bearded dragons, geckos and snakes are fascinating, quiet companions. Each species has specific heat, light and humidity needs, so research before you buy.

Personality and behaviour

Calm and watchful. Many tolerate gentle handling once settled, though they do not show affection the way dogs or cats do.

Care tips

Setup

A properly sized enclosure with a warm basking spot and cooler area, correct UVB lighting for species that need it, and hiding places.

Cleaning

Spot-clean daily and disinfect regularly. Always wash your hands after handling.

Health

Poor appetite, wheezing, stuck shed or lethargy means a trip to a reptile-savvy vet.

Recommended food

It depends on the species. Bearded dragons eat insects and leafy greens, leopard geckos eat insects, and snakes eat whole prey. Dust insects with calcium as your vet advises.

Fun facts

  1. Reptiles rely on their surroundings for warmth.
  2. Many lizards can drop their tails to escape predators.
  3. Bearded dragons wave an arm to show they are not a threat.

This guide is general information to help you get started. It isn’t a substitute for advice from your vet, who knows your animal best.
