About

Tortoises live on land and turtles spend most of their time in water. Many live for decades, so they are a genuine long-term commitment.

Personality and behaviour

Calm, curious and surprisingly individual. They learn feeding routines and often recognise their keepers.

Care tips

Housing

Tortoises need a large, secure enclosure with plenty of space, safe outdoor time in the sun, a warm basking spot and shelter. Turtles need a big filtered tank with a dry basking area.

Light

Sunshine or proper UVB lighting, plus calcium, helps keep shells and bones strong.

Health

Watch for soft or damaged shells, runny noses and overgrown beaks, and see a reptile vet if you notice any.

Recommended food

Tortoises need mostly leafy greens, weeds and flowers with very little fruit. Turtles eat quality turtle pellets, greens and the occasional protein treat.

Fun facts

  1. A tortoise's shell is part of its skeleton, fused to the ribs and spine.
  2. Some tortoise species can live for over 100 years.
  3. They can feel touch through their shells.
